The Toyota GR lineup is a high-performance world defined by adrenaline, but unlike the race cars that built it, this world demands no compromise when you hit the streets. Toyota GR Meaning

Toyota GR Meaning: What Is “GR?”

The “GR” in the Toyota GR lineup stands for “Gazoo Racing.” The “Gazoo” part essentially means “Garage.” But why use this name when Toyota Racing Development (TRD) already exists?

The answer is a lot more interesting than you might expect. Back in the mid-2000s, then-Toyota-VP Akio Toyoda wanted little more than to go racing. Bursting with a love for motorsports but bound to business by his status as a family heir to the Toyota brand, he helped create a race team of Toyota employees in secret. Unable to use the planned Toyota-branded name for his team, he chose the “Gazoo” name from one of the brand’s website projects.

Gazoo Racing was established, and Akio Toyoda’s racing passion and skills were proven to the world under his alter ego, “Morizo” (which is a name you’ll see on the newest Toyota GR vehicle). The Toyota GR lineup consisted entirely of race cars at the time, but once Akio Toyoda became the president of Toyota, the path forward was clear: Go all-out in the racing world and bring the lessons learned there to the street.

The Toyota GR team pushed on with newfound freedom, proving their might by building more and more intense race cars for the grueling Dakar Rally, World Rally Championship (WRC), and World Endurance Championship (WEC). If you need proof of their dedication, consider that the Toyota GR team won the 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022 24 Hours of Le Mans.

The resulting road-going Toyota GR vehicles were epic. We’d get our first taste of the action with the 2020 GR Supra, and as they say, the rest is history. Today, the Toyota GR line of vehicles encompasses three road-going legends.

All Toyota GR Models: An Overview

The Toyota GR86

Known as the “Toyota 86” up until the 2022 model year, this iconic sports car is the definition of pure fun. Despite being thoroughly modern, though, this snappy machine captures the old-school spirit of engaging RWD sportiness with picture-perfect accuracy. With advanced safety, comfort, convenience, and benefits like a one-year National Auto Sport Association (NASA) membership1 and a complimentary High-Performance Driving Experience (HPDE),2 the GR86 leads the Toyota GR lineup with fun at the forefront.

The Toyota GR Supra

The GR Supra also includes a one-year NASA membership1 and HPDE,2 but it is a different breed of sports car from the rest of the Toyota GR lineup. It’s larger and more powerful than the GR86 and is designed to capture the railgun-like performance of its predecessor. Offering luxury on top, the GR Supra is the ideal mix of daily-driving enjoyment with track-blitzing capabilities. Whether you love the first Celica Supra or the movie-star fourth-generation Supra, this latest chapter in Supra history is bound to thrill.

The Toyota GR Corolla

Bringing the adrenaline of the WRC to the road, the Toyota GR Corolla is unlike any Corolla you’ve heard of. Furiously demolishing the competition with an exclusive three-cylinder engine, the GR Corolla can go from 0 to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds. But its agility makes it even faster on the circuit; with the new GR-FOUR AWD system, a new platform with incredible rigidity, wild enhancements like an available forged-carbon roof, a one-year NASA membership1 and HPDE,2 an available Morizo Edition that takes everything further, and much more, the GR Corolla is perhaps the most exciting member of the Toyota GR lineup.

Toyota GR Lineup vs. Toyota TRD Lineup

Toyota GR Lineup vs. Toyota TRD Lineup: What’s the Difference?

Simply put, TRD-branded Toyota vehicles like the Tacoma TRD Pro are designed for unstoppable off-road performance, while GR-branded vehicles like the GR Supra are thrilling road machines that take on race tracks with precision and power. More so, the Toyota GR lineup consists of unique platforms, while the Toyota TRD lineup enhances existing models with powerful add-ons.

There is an exception to this trend: The Toyota Camry TRD. You can think of it as a more relaxed sibling to the Toyota GR lineup.

A final difference is that TRD vehicles have iconically unique color schemes and packages from GR vehicles, including the Toyota Solar Octane TRD Pro and Toyota Lunar Rock TRD Pro lineups.
