When we use the word “family,” we mean it! Our founder, Vernon Schoemaker, first entered the auto industry working for his uncle in Amarillo in the late 1940s following a three-year term in the Navy. Years later, when Toyota approached them with the idea of opening a dealership in Dallas Fort Worth, Vernon was tempted but the logistics of moving his family and selling their home would have been difficult. When the Schoemakers received an unexpected offer on their house before even listing it for sale, they knew it was meant to be and headed for Irving!
Vernon first opened Toyota of Irving in an existing building at 222 E Irving Boulevard on September 15th, 1968. The first ten years really defined the dealership’s character–weathering the dock strike, coming out on top during the gas crunch–ultimately growing into a thriving, successful business.
In the late seventies, Toyota of Irving’s success enabled us to purchase land in our present-day location on what was then Highway 183, and Vernon built the dealership of his dreams: large to allow for growth, featuring the latest mechanical equipment and tools, and incorporating local style. By this time Vernon’s son David was heavily involved with the company, and as the years passed David’s sons Jereme and Jonathan joined our team, making three generations of Schoemakers at Toyota of Irving.
In 2014 we realized the latest incarnation of Vernon’s dream–our need to modernize and the expansion of Airport Freeway coincided to make our present-day complex possible. We were able to reuse 72% of our existing structure while obtaining LEED Green Building Certification and including dozens of customized amenities specifically for our customers. In keeping with Toyota of Irving tradition, we invested heavily in the newest and best tools and equipment and incorporated Texas and Irving style and accents throughout the building. Family members were involved every step of the way from architectural and design elements to decoration and technology. Our dealership proudly stands as an employee, community, and family collaboration.
We are still owned and operated by the Schoemaker family–not a corporate conglomerate. As our customer, you join this family.
